The Community Leadership Education Fund (CLEF) was initiated in 1996. It is a Future Leaders
Programme, focused on unlocking talent across our rural partner communities, talent that would otherwise go
unrealised due to the unrelenting poverty cycle that many rural families are trapped in.
Initiated in South Africa, the footprint has progressively been expanded to include students from rural communities in Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, Botswana and Namibia. Our expansion into Mozambique was delayed by the impact of COVID-19, however our goal is to launch the programme there in 2023.
To-date, it has supported 762 students with bursaries and psycho-social support.
They have been selected through an intensive process, led by community leaders and with emphasis on providing an opportunity for exceptional talent to be realised, through not only funding, but also the pyscho-social support that a young person from a rural environment needs, when leaving home and entering life on the university campus.
